The ESP8266 is a low-cost Wi-Fi chip with full TCP/IP stack and MCU (microcontroller unit) capability produced by Shanghai-based Chinese manufacturer, Espressif Systems. The ESP-12F module is a shielded breakout board that combines the ESP8266 with 4MB of flash and a PCB antenna. The ESP-12F is an improved version of the 12E. It is pin compatible, with more stable output and a better antenna.
The default firmware can add WIFI capability to another microcontroller over a serial interface, but this little chip really shines when loaded with Arduino, NodeMCU, or MicroPython.
